Moving Windows

I’m very fortunate to have this opportunity to work in collaboration with Gary van de Griek and Stefanie Mitchel in this sculptural wall-hanging called “Moving Windows” which is exhibited in the Heroes Exhibit.

I was giving 1 photo and asked not to research the person in the image. I was to simply create. Using my meditative process, first thought creation, I was instantly seeing movement. The type of movement seen through a subway train window. The flashing by of subway art, girders holding up the tunnel, and passing trains. I got to work. I knew I wanted to keep the integrity of the photograph and illustrate kinetic flashes and obstructions. I then asked Stefanie if the person in the photo was from NYC. He was! And she was there at the moment I contacted her! I love to work in a Symbolic Use of Materials, so I asked her for some New York soil. Not only did she retrieve NYC soil but she got the most energy-infused soil possible for this project, soil from underneath the subjects window! So I mixed the soil into the black dark mixture behind the images. This, to me, holds the energy of the place in a spiritual connection with the imagery of the man.

At the Artist Talk, Stefanie revealed the man’s name: Harold Hunter. He acted in the 1995 movie Kids and was a creative force in NYC street skating. I remember being in NYC in the 90’s and, after watching some of Harold’s videos, I believe I caught the same videos in Virgin Mega Store in Times Square for a Zoo York campaign! More synchronicities to be revealed.
